WE AFFECT POSITIVE CHANGE.

We support the NHS and other organisations to deliver assessments, support programmes and services for children and adults with the most challenging behavioural issues. Delivering tangible results, positive outcomes and genuine improvements of quality of life is difficult. Many people will have already been treated by other providers, often with failed outcomes.

Our unique five-stage model is proven to deliver effective, person-centred, and holistic solutions which make a lasting impact on people and their families.

Our process and methodology are based on the principles and practices of Positive Behaviour Support, blended with other practices to best suit each person’s needs.

WHAT IS POSITIVE BEHAVIOURAL SUPPORT?

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-backed methodology which considers the person as a whole, including their life history, physical health, and emotional needs. PBS ensures an individual’s personal needs, wants, desires and goals are central to the support provided. The primary goal of PBS is to improve the quality of life of people who engage in behaviours of concern, their family members, and professionals in their support network.

In PBS, behaviours of concern are seen through the lens of a biopsychosocial model, according to which behavioural support needs arise due to a mismatch between the person’s environment and their individual needs.

We therefore seek to understand the reasons behind behaviours of concern so that unmet needs can be met by making changes to the person’s environment and building agency.

PBS provides support based on inclusion, choice, participation and equal opportunities. The views and perspectives of the person engaging in behaviours of concern are encouraged throughout all stages of their support. People who live, care for and work with the person are also valuable collaboration partners.

As well as helping react to behaviours of concern, PBS is proactive and preventative, focusing on teaching skills that help people communicate more effectively and live the lives they want to live.

WHAT IS OUR UNIQUE 5-STAGE MODEL?

Our unique 5-stage model adopts a human rights-based approach promoting quality of life, equality, and inclusion. Positive Behaviour Support may include a range of evidence-based practices, e.g., environmental changes, skills teaching, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. We combine the best of each practice and are thereby able to tailor our services to the needs of each child or adult to achieve truly holistic and person-centred outcomes. Together with clients, their families and networks we work through the following 5-stages:

STAGE 1

MATCHING

Initially, we get to know a client, their circumstances and their support network, as well as what everyone hopes to achieve through our involvement.

We then identify what we can do to make the greatest difference to the life of the client, their family and the rest of their support network.

STAGE 2

ENGAGING

We engage a client with the support we will provide and what it aims to achieve. This includes us inspiring, motivating and cheerleading a client so they feel ready to do more, be more and ultimately get more from life.

In addition, we also activate members of the client’s support network and ask them to commit to helping the client to change their behaviour and current situation.

STAGE 3

UNDERSTANDING

We use the science of behaviour analysis to gain a comprehensive understanding of a client and the reasons behind their challenging behaviour. This involves us assessing the client in a range of settings, for example, at their home, a school, residential care setting or supported living environment.

STAGE 4

DELIVERING

We deliver comprehensive behaviour programmes to help reframe the challenging behaviour of a client and develop flexible, tailored solutions that lead to positive change.

This may involve us providing direct behaviour therapy to a client, teaching a client new skills so they can better manage their behaviour, or training a client’s network to provide support in a different way.

STAGE 5

CELEBRATING

During this phase, we provide honest and positive summaries to keep the client and their network up to date with their progress.

Importantly, we also take valuable time to celebrate the achievements of our clients, which can be hugely beneficial.

And finally, we end our process when we know the client and their support network are totally committed to attaining the high expectations they have set for themselves.

“We now see hope after working with Positive Support Group. After our child’s exclusion, we started to lose it. But working with you guys has helped us to believe that things will improve.”
